- Click and start typingThe clock starts on your first keystroke. Press space after each word and use backspace to fix mistakes.
- Finish the runIn time mode the test ends when the timer hits zero. In words mode it ends when you type the last word.
- Read your resultsCheck your WPM, accuracy, raw speed, consistency and the per-second chart, then press Tab to go again.
What your results actually mean
One big number is nice, but the details tell you what to practise. Here is how each stat is worked out.
- WPM
- Words per minute. Every five characters count as one word, and only correct words (plus the spaces between them) are counted.
- Raw
- The same calculation, but with every keystroke included, mistakes and all. A big gap between raw and WPM means you are typing faster than you can control.
- Accuracy
- The share of your keystrokes that were correct. Fixing a typo with backspace still counts as a mistake, because it cost you time.
- Consistency
- How steady your speed was from second to second. Higher is smoother. Spikes usually mean you are rushing easy words and stumbling on hard ones.
Tips for typing faster without wrecking accuracy
Speed is mostly a side effect of being relaxed and accurate. These habits help more than any trick.
Accuracy first
Slow down until you are hitting 95% or better. Speed comes back quickly once the mistakes stop.
Look one word ahead
Let your eyes run slightly in front of your fingers. It smooths out your rhythm and cuts the little pauses between words.
Stay loose
Tense shoulders and hard key presses slow you down. Light, even taps are faster and kinder to your wrists.
Keep your eyes on the screen
Looking at the keyboard breaks your flow. If you need to, practise slowly until the key positions stick.
Use all ten fingers
Each finger owns a set of keys. It feels slower for a week or two, then it pays you back for years.
Short and often
Ten focused minutes a day beat one long session on Sunday. Take a break when your accuracy starts to slip.
Why a typing test is worth a few minutes
Most of us type every day and never measure it. A quick test shows you a baseline, and that is surprisingly motivating. Faster typing means less friction when you write emails, code, notes or messages, and it leaves more of your attention for the actual ideas.
TypeMonk is built to be calm. The interface fades away while you type, the text is easy to read on any screen, and your personal bests are saved in your browser so you can beat your own score next time.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
The average person types around 40 words per minute. Between 60 and 80 WPM is solid for office work, and anything above 100 WPM is fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed, so aim for 95% or better.
How does TypeMonk calculate WPM?
Every five characters count as one word. Only correctly typed words and the spaces between them count toward WPM, and the total is divided by the time in minutes.
What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?
Raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included. WPM counts only the correct part, so it is never higher than raw WPM.
Can I install TypeMonk as an app?
Yes. Tap the Install app button at the top of the page. On iPhone and iPad open the Share menu in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen. Once installed, TypeMonk also works offline.
Does TypeMonk work on phones and tablets?
Yes, the layout adapts to any screen size. A physical keyboard gives the most reliable results, but the on-screen keyboard works too.
Is TypeMonk free, and is my data stored anywhere?
TypeMonk is completely free and needs no account. Your settings and personal bests are saved only in your own browser and are never sent to a server.
